Turning disk latency into memory latency
A 40 GB buffer pool or shared_buffers allocation removes almost all random reads from the hot path, which typically cuts p99 query times by an order of magnitude compared to a 16 GB node with identical CPU. Large JVM heaps, in-memory OLAP engines and heavyweight caching layers all behave predictably at this capacity.
